It all began in
Sydney 1891
There Frederick Alfred Lohmann founded Lohmann & Co. as a trading company
for Australian wool. In 1901 Lohmann moved the company's head office to Bremen.
In 1924 Friedrich-Wilhelm Hempel senior joined the company and established a
department for metal and ores. This department developed so successfully that
it was separated from that company and then incorporated in Berlin as an independent
company named Lohmann & Co., Erze und Metalle with Friedrich Wilhelm Hempel
senior becoming a partner. On January 1st, 1950 he acquired all of the company's
shares.Under the new name F.W. Hempel & Co. Erze und Metalle continued its successful development.
The second generation under Friedrich-Wilhelm Hempel junior, who joined the company in 1963, continued the expansion.
At the beginning of the seventies,
the company had diversified into an international group of companies with different
fields of operations.
Trading, stock keeping as well as tailor-made processing and preparation of semi-finished metal products became the core of the business which included the production of flame retarding products as well as the reprocessing of used batteries. Last but not least the production of copper-alloys and plastic compounds.
When in 1988 Friedrich-Wilhelm Hempel junior took 100 % control of the group the head quarters were transferred from Bremen to Duesseldorf.
The third generation under Christian Hempel and André Hempel the group is still expanding in the world of metals, alloys and metal materials. Nowadays there are three lines of business: raw materials, semi-finished products and production.
